subtraction
Hey :) has anyone tried teaching subtraction to their classes yet? i'm trying to brainstorm ways in which i can relate music to subtraction in a second and third grade LAD class. So far i've come up with counting how many beats each note lasts for two different notes, then seeing how many more beats the longer one had, but this sounds more complicated than just showing them subtraction without the music. I've also thought about having the kids count how many different notes i play in one easy "mini-piece" and then in another uncomplicated "mini-piece" and having them subtract those, but these ideas sound a little too complicated.
Any suggestions?

Hi Mariana--
I have some colored cups that can be used to teach subtraction musically. Ms. Beatty, downstairs by the Gym, also has a whole bag of cups too. Feel free to stop by any time and take as many as you need.
yes about the plastic cups - can you either try to explain to me or show me how that works again?
if not, that's fine - the kids seem to get the whole subtracting concept with little green toy bears. We're working on patterns now and I've been using staffs and musical notes with their corresponding values to teach them what goes into pictographs and how to follow patterns on grid paper.
